TAXI STRIKES TRAM POLE.
DRIVER SERIOUSLY INJURED.
As the result of an accident which occurred in Upper Symonds Street shortly after two o'clock yesterday afternoon, a taxi-driver named Christopher Digby was admitted to the hospital from severe injuries to his head. With three passengers in his car, Digby was proceedinc from the direction of Grafton Bridge, and when near East Street, either through the steering gear failing or the wheels skidding, the car ran straight into an electric tram pole. Digby, who is a married man, 48 years of age, and a resident of Cook Street, was thrown out, and suffered injuries to his head which necessitated his immediate removal to the hospital. Of the others in the car, one, a lady was slightly injured on the head, but the other two escaped unhurt. The front of the car, which is owned by Diebv. was badly smashed. At an early hour this morning Dishy was reported to be only semi-conscious and delirious, and his condition was serious.
