DEATH AT THE FORD.
CHINAMAN DROWNED.
CROSSING FLOODED-, RIVER.
[BY .TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Taumarosui, Sunday. A fatality occurred in the Wanganui River yesterday morning. The deceased and another Chinaman were driving a trap across a ford of the flooded river at Taumarunui, when the current proved too strong for them. The horse and trap, and the occupants of the latter, were carried down thti rapids for a distance of nearly half-a-mile. Finally the vehirle overturned and nhrew the Chinese into the stream. One man managed to save himself by clambering on to the swing bridge which crosses to Winter's Island, but the other was drowned. The horsa was extricated with some difficulty from the tangled harness by a Maori, and brought to shorn. It is said that the men were warned by two settlers against attempting to cross yesterday. The one who lost his life was named Wall, and had been in Taumarunui only a few days. The other, who was driving, knew the ford well, having driven over it many times. The accident is' looked upon as another proof of the necessity for a bridge.
