GERMANS CAUGHT IN TRAP AT NIEUPORT.
EXACTED TRIUMPH CHANGED TO DISASTER.
ENFILADED. IN PURPOSELY ABANDONED TRENCHES.
'Received May 12, B.S p.m.)
Dunkirk, May 11
Tt was expected that the German offensive in the region of Xieuport would begin on May 9. The wind recently has been so strong that it would have dispersed asphyxiating gases. The Germans finally attacked amid a blinding whirlwind of sand blowing upon the allies' trenches.
In accordance with a prearranged plan, the allies' centre yielded while the wings held their ground. The Germans followed up their success, and established themselves in the abandoned trenches. Then the allies' wings doubled in and enfiladed the Germans on both sides. A fierce struggle was carried on to the beach. The Germans finally were forced to retreat, leaving their wounded.
