ALLIES FORCE FIGHTING ALONG THE NORTHERN FRONT.
NEW GROUND WON NORTH OF ARRAS.
ENEMY STORMED IN FORTIFIED CHAPEL
FOURTH LINE OF GERMAN TRENCHES REACHED.
(Received May 12. 10 p.m.)
Paris, May 11
An official communique states: The French successes north of Anas are being extended. As the result of engagements of extreme violence they captured the entire system of German trenches astride the Loos-Vermclles Road. They also assaulted a large fort and chapel at Notre Dame tie Lorette which had been transformed into a veritable fortress, and had been defended by the Germans with ardour for months. The position was invested and rushed in the afternoon. After a desperate conflict the allies, without stopping, drove the enemy out of trenches south of the chapel, where several hundred German
corpses were found,
'•German troops debouching from Ablain-St. Xazaire counterattacked, but their attack was broken at the outset. The allies resumed the offensive and gained ground in the direction of a sugar refinery at Souchez.
'• After a violent engagement the allies seized a cemetery at Neuvillc-St. Vaast, which the Germans had strongly organised. They have now reached the fourth line of German trenches in this district, and continue to take many prisoners."'
