AUSTRALASIANS ACCOMPLISH UNPRECEDENTED FEAT.
LANDING IN FACE OF STRONGLY POSTED ENEMY.
GENERAL BIRDWOOD VERY PROUD OF HIS MEN.
Melbourne, May 12.
Lieutenant-Colonel Simmenses, who has been invalided from Egypt, says General Birdwood told him that the Australasians were about to attempt what it was believed had never before been at tempted in the history of the world, namely, the landing of a big force in the face of a strongly posted enemy. He was sure they would do what was asked of them. His opinion was based upon watching them closely for many weeks. The general praised the keenness of the colonials, and said he had never seen such a large body of men so physically fit. . He was very proud of them.
