WELLINGTON AFFAIRS.
PROGRAMME FOR THE YEAR.
SHORT-DATED LOANS.
[BY telegraph.— press association.]
Wellington, Wednesday. Replying to congratulatory addresses after his installation to-day, the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke) said that in connection with finance he was not in favour of contracting loans for short periods—which might be difficult to convert later on, besides which they would cost a considerable amount. There were works which some people might consider very pressing, but which the council realised could be held over until money was obtainable at a cheaper rate. The revenue from ordinary sources at the present time would be sufficient for ordinary purposes. During the coming year, first of all, they ought to deal with the matter of the milk supply, and in that connection he was in favour of submitting to the electors tho question of tho municipaligation of the supply, of the establishment of a clearing house, and more exact inspection than at present. There was one tiling certain, that it was incumbent upon tho city to see that in connection with a matter that was of vital importance, more particularly, to the infant life of tho city, they should' set up a condition of affairs that would result in the supply of the very best milk that could be obtained. Improvements to various streets, the electric lighting, and the reserves, would be carried out as opportunity offered.
