SHIPS WITH CONTRABAND.

In a message to the American people Hen* Dernburg declares that Americans will only be safe if they travel in American vessels not carrying contraband. An American ship with contraband would be torpedoed in exactly the same way as a British vessel except that an attempt would be made to give warning in time for the passengers and crew to escape.

Dvnedix, Tuesday.
It is reported that an American family named Gardner, consisting of father, mother, and two sons, who had intended to settle in New Zealand, were on board the Lusitania. The father and mother were lost and the eons rescued. Tho father, James Gardner, referred to in this message, was an ex-High School boy and a well-known resident of Dunedin. About 13 years ago he relinquished his business us a hosiery manufacturer and went to Toronto, Canada. In that city Mr. Gardner had a large interest in a costume manufacturing company, which interest he recently disposed of. It was hie intention to have come to New Zealand to be near his eldest son, who is engaged in fruit) farming in the Nelson district.
