MANUKAU COUNTY.

The Mamikau County Council mot yester* day. There were present The chairman,, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, Messrs. J. Bryant, A. B. Bell, L. Gilbert-son, A. Muir, and A., E. Hattaway.

The Wairoa Road Board wrote asking the council to take steps to open up tha Maraetai Beach Road from the road board's boundary to the Maraetai Wharf for wheeled traffic. The council resolved to attend to tliis matter when the expected Government grant was received.

A letter was submitted from the Southland County Council, asking that support' should be given by the Manukau County Council to the following resolution :—• " That this council is of opinion that motor vehicles should be taxed, and con-i siders that the only equitable way of levy-i ing a tax is on tyres. That this council is also of opinion that the Government should collect the tax and distribute id pro rata between local bodies. A larger* proportion to be paid to county councils and road hoards than to borough councils "I The letter was received.

A number of ratepayers petitioned thai council, urging that a footpath should be* constructed along Station Road from the* Papatoetoe station to Bell's corner. .18 was pointed out that this road was subject to heavy motor and vehicular traffic* which was a constant danger to wonwn! and children, as the crown of the road! was the only place suitable for walkirg., The council resolved to keep the represent tations of the petitioners in view. On the motion of Mr. Hattaway it was resolved to ask the county engineer for ai report on the progress made in the con-> struction of the Panmure' Bridge. It was* also decided to ask the engineer to furnish' a report on the tests that had been made! in regard to all material used for the? bridge. It was resolved to purchase a three-acre section of land at Pakuranga for the purposes of a quarry and for storing the coun* cil's plant. On the property there is a' dwelling and outbuildings. The purchase/ price is £450.
