BRITISH PRESSING ON TO LA BASSEE.
GREAT ATTACK ON GERMAN STRONGHOLD.
VULNERABLE POINTS IN ENEMY'S COMMUNICATIONS. (Received May 11, 11.5 p.m.) London, May 11. The correspondent of the Daily News at Dunkirk states that a British attack on La Bassec began at dawn on Saturday. Heavy artillery duels were fought at Bailleul, and lasted seven hours on Saturday. They were resumed at three o'clock on Sunday morning and are still raging. Under the cover of the big guns British infantry is pressing onward for a great thrust at the La Bassee stronghold. The Trench are supporting the attack with great vigour. The British and French offensive covers a front of 23 miles. The advance in the French sector is already more than that made at Neuve Chapelle.
The German line protects a valuable railway system. If the allies pierced it they would threaten the German communications. The enemy's position is exceptionally strong, consisting of slag heaps connected by a maze' of barbed wire and communication trenches.
