ACCLIMATISATION AFFAIRS.

SHOOTING OF PIGEONS.

PLEA FOR OPEN SEASON.

A meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society was held fast evening, there being present Lieut. -Col. Hazard, Messrs. J. J. Walklate. J. S. Brigham, F. Willis and Dr. Cbatfield.

Letters were received from the Te Kuiti and Thames branch societies regarding the alleged extensive shooting of pigeons ill the close season. The futility of declaring a close season was strongly urged in the letters. Members of the council stated that the question had been raised re peatedly during the past few years and that the attention of the Government had been drawn to it. Mr. Willis said that it was stated that the Maoris were shooting the pigeons all the time. It was resolved to forward the letters to the Minister fur Internal Affairs without comment. It was also decided "to ask the Government to assist ill regard to extra rangers.

A letter was read from Mr. J. Elliot regarding the question of the legality of netting fish in lakes. It was stated that there was some division of opinion cut tho matter and it was resolved to refer the matter to the Minister for Internal Affairs.

In reply to Mr. Brighaijp, the president said that lie had consulted the society's snlicttoi, Mr. Earl, in regard to the legality of the rules. Mr. Earl bad expressed the opinion that the society's position was quite in order. It was not certain whether the society was registered or not, hilt this matter was being attended to. There was no actual necessity for the society to he registered so far as "the point which had cropped up at the recent meeting was concerned, but as a matter of convenience in other respects it was intended to secure registration if it had not already been effected.

The society's ranger reported that he had made an extensive tour of the district and that he had examined 121 game bags.

The Resignation of Mr. J. Miller, curator of "x Tapapa game farm, was received and accepted as from June 10, It was decided to grant Mr. Miller a month leave of absence on full pay in consideration of the fact that be has had no annual leave during the time that he has been in the society's service,
