AT THE DARDANELLES.
The latest news from the Dardanelles indicates marked progress in the Allied effort to secure control of the Gallipoli Peninsula and of the forts dominating tho Dardanelles. Important heights commanding the Kilid Bahr forts to the south of the position occupied by the New Zealand and Australian forces have been captured, while at the northern end of the peninsula troops landed from the Gulf -of Saros are attacking the Bulair forts. The statement that a Russian array is operating from the Black Sea is not well authenticated, but it. is not improbable that such a movement is part of the Allied plan of campaign. For very obvious
reasons there has been no statement of the strength of the forces on the peninsula, but it. can readily be believed that they are ample to overcome all obstacles. At the landing, in face of an expectant enemy, casualties were unavoidably heavy; -but it can be anticipated, now that our, troops are well established, that rapid progress towards the object in view can be made 'at , comparatively small cost. Mr. Ashmead Bartlett, the English official correspondent with the fleet at the Dardanelles, assures us, that two 1 days after the landing the New Zea-' land and Australian troops .were "so thoroughly entrenched that all the Turks in Thrace and Gallipoli will never turn them out." There may bo checks before the Dardanelles are open, but the ultimate success of the enterprise has never been in doubt since the day our troops forced their way on to Turkish soil and " refused to budge a foot,"- . . : I
