BRIEF SITTING HELD.

A shoiit sitting of the Police Court yesterday morning was presided over by Messrs. W. Tattley, W. P. Taylor, and A. Thompson.

»■ Three first offenders, convicted of insobriety, forfeited their bail, as they did not appear. Another first offender, who had been in custody since Saturday, was released on the payment of 2s od cab hire. James Hamilton and James George Moase, two second offenders, wero each fined 10s, tho former having to pay 6s and the latter 2s 6d as cab hire, in addition to the fine.

A remand until to-day was granted in the oases of several persons charged with breaking their prohibition orders. Atinio Dunn denied a charge of soliciting in Cook Street. ' The police evidence was to the effect that the woman had stopped ft number of men. A conviction was recorded, making the 135 th, and a sentence of one month's imprisonment with hard labour was imposed. Admitting that he had failed to keep his express cart as near as practicable to the left-hand side of Patteson Street, John Rabbidgo was fined 5s with 7s cdfits. A difference of opinion on the waterfront between N. E. Owen and a wharf labourer named Marsh led to the latter being charged with assault. Marsh pleaded guilty, but the charge was dismissed, Marsh being warned that however great the provocation ho must not retaliate with his fists. A remand for eight days was granted in the case of William Martin, who is alleged to have stolon a set of snooker halls, valued at £12. It was stated that further charges are pending, Bail was allowed in one surety of £50 or in two of £25 each, the accused to report daily to the police. Martin is alleged to have retained the balls when he vacated a billiard saloon in Ponsonby, the balls being subsequently recovered from a pawnbroker's shop.
