GENERAL INCREASE SHOWN.
Particulars of the new rates of freight fixed by the shipping companies for the carriage of cargo from New Zealand have been published in Wellington. The new scale will be brought into operation on Saturday. Freights on cargo such as butter, meat, and cheese, where carried 'undsr existing contracts, will not be affected.
The new rates, together with rates ruling at present, are as follows :—

These rate s ere for London and other ports in the United Kingdom, and are below those ruling in Australia for similar cargo. They are subject also to the usual primage and to 25 per cent, war surcharge. The new rate s for New Zealand hemp and tow come into operation on July 1 and will rule until December 31. They compare as follows: —
Xew Rate. Old Rate. Hemp, per ton £4 0 0 13 15 0 Tow, per ton 4 15 n 4 0 0 The revised rates to Rio de Janeiro and Monte Video will he as follows: Oats and potatoes, £2 15s per ton; general cargo, £3 10s per ton"; agricultural machinery; £3 per ton.
