SECOND EDITION.

LOSS OF THE LUSITANIA.

DIFFICULTIES OF LAUNCHING THE BOATS. SOME CONFUSION AMONG FRIGHTENED PASSENGERS. COLLAPSIBLE BOATS PROVE OF LITTLE VALUE. (Received May 11, 2 a.m.) London, May 10. When the boats on the starboard side of the Lusitania were safely launched, there was terrible danger owing to the superstructure sjowly descending. The funnels and davits killed many persons, and also fouled several boats.

A harrowing sight was that of at least 30 babies laid out on the floor of a temporary morgue in Queenstown.

Though the quickness of the disaster provided some justification, the people on board pushed and crowded into the boats, despite cries of " Women and children first !'*' A boat which was lowered contained the mails and steerage passengers, but it capsized. Most of the collapsible boats carried remained fastened, and were therefore useless.
