HEAVY FIGHTING ALONG BRITISH FRONT.
VIOLENT ATTACKS DELIVERED BY GERMANS.
FRENCH CARRY STRONG POSITION NEAR LENS.
Wellington, May 9.
Tho High Commissioner reports from London on May B:—"Sir John French reports that to-night and yesterday fighting continued south-east of Ypres without effecting any change in the situation. We recovered trenches lost the day before. In the morning the enemy Started a violent attack on the trenches from Ypres to Poelcappelle and along the Ypres-Menin roads. A heavy bombardment preceded the attack. Fighting continues and counter attacks are in progress.
" There is no change along the remainder of the front.
"Paris reports that a strong German defensive work in the vicinity of Lens, north of Arras, was carried. Progress was made along the right bank of the Fecht, in Alsace."
BRITISH RECAPTURE TRENCHES AT HILL 60.
GERMANS REPULSED NEAR SAINT JULIEN.

Paris, May 8.
An official communique states:—" The British repulsed violent German attacks near Saint Julien on the 7th, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. The British have retaken part of the trenches previously lost at Hill 60."
