LUSITANIA SUNK.
OFF THE IRISH COAST. TORPEDOED. BY GERMANS NO WARNING GIVEN. GREAT LOSS OF LIFE. SENSATION IN AMERICA. FAMOUS PEOPLE MISSING. The huge Cunard liner Lusitania, 30,396 tons, the fastest merchant vessel in the world, was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine off the south coast of Ireland on Friday afternoon, May 7. So far as is known, there were 2160 persons, including passengers and crew, aboard the vessel, and the Admiralty reports that, of these, not more than 700 were saved. It is feared that the total loss of life will exceed 1400. Many famous British and United States people were among the passengers, and some of these are reported to be missing. The passengers included 956 British, 188 Americans, and 62 Russians. The outrage has caused a great outburst of indignation and anger in America, and Mr. Roosevelt and .some of the newspapers demand that the United States take action of some kind.
