MINING NEWS.
OCCIDENTAL.
[bt TELEGRAPH— CORRESPONrENT.] Thames, Saturday. The principal work in progress in the Occidental mine during the past few months hae been that of stoping out the block of ground on the No. 2 and Occidental branch reefs from the low level to the main adit level, and so far payable returns, have been obtained. It has now been decided to proceed with the work of opening up a new block on the No. 2 reef at a low level by continuing the sinking of the shaft; this is now down a depth of 85ft below tho adit level and about 100 ft below the present low level, and it is intended to sink it for a further 50ft, which will open up a new block with 60ft of backs. Arrangements are now in hand for installing a now electrical winding plant at tho top of the shaft in the adit level, and the current will bo obtained from the municipal power-house. This should enable tho work being carried out expeditiously, as the shaft is a largo one and fitted with cage and all up-to-date appliances.
