"PLAY THE GAME OF OUR
FOREFATHERS."
REMARKS BY THE GOVERNOR.
A few remarks concerning the present war were made by His Excellency the Governor at a social gathering of the Orphans Club on Saturday evening. He referred to the despicable tricks adopted by the Germans. "If you were to take this gathering as a whole to-night," he said, "it would probably say 'We are dealing with snakes, so treat them as snakes.' (Hear, hear.) But if an individual is taken, would the answer be the Mine? Would not the individual say ' It is wrong. They can play the game of snakes, but, by God, we will play the game we have always played— straight game of our forefathers.*' (Loud applause.) The other suggestion is certainly a suggestion of the devil. We have had handed down to us a great heritage. Our forefathers did not play the snake, and we. the children who came after them, will not play the snake. (Cries of "No.") Quite right, too," added His Excellency. "When I first spoke here in Auckland," continued the Governor, " I said that I had had the honour of being associated with the New Zealand soldiers in the South African war, a war, by the way, which now appears only as a pinhead in comparison with the present great struggle. I said then that 1 was convinced that, if occasion ever again arose, tho children of the Dominion would not be found wanting. And they have not been found wanting. (Cheers.) "Three battalions of my own regiment are now in France, while another is on tho border of Persia. On glancing through tho casualty lists as they appear, I find i that many of my contemporaries are gone and so can you wonder that I do not care to speak at length at the present time? It is the King's wish that I am here in New Zealand, hut. if you asked me personally where I would rather be, I would reply that I wish I were with my regiment. (Loud cheers). My profession was that of a soldier for just on twenty years, and my heart goes out to thoso who soldiered with me." (Applause.)
