FIFTY YEARS AGO.

WRECK OF THE PETREL

v VESSEL BREAKING UP.

(Prom the lIEEaID of May 8, 1865.)

By private letter from Kaipara we learn that the Petrel is breaking up fast and that the wreck is filling up with sand. The

lifeboat supplied by the Government Is still on the beach. Several attempts have been made by the pilot, Captain James, to get her off, but, with the limited means at his disposal, lie has not been able to

accomplish it. Someone has mischievously cut the fore-thwart out of., her, and committed other damage. It is a pity that so enterprising and able officer should be so cramped for men in a large and rising district like the Kaipara.
