" • The sympathy of motorists all over the world will go out to Mr Herbert' Austin, the founder and managing director of the Austin Motor Corapaav, who from the very earliest days of the motor industry in England has | taken' so prominent a art in the development of the motor vehicle. He has lost his only son, Second Lieutenant Vernon James Austin, who was killed in action' at La Bassee,' after having passed scathless through : the,' retreat from Mens, tha' battles -of the . Canterbury, finishing 'in Germany and Sweden iv In 1912 he commenced his training at -Bulford Camp as a reserve officer ,in the 22nd Battery, . 34th Brigade ' of the Boyal Field Artillery. _ He > took the' keenest and 'closest interest in' his profession -of motor--engineer and served as : mechanician to Mr. ■■ Harold.
