ALLIES MAKING PROGRESS IN PENINSULA.
TURKS ATTEMPT TO'BEING. UP REINFORCEMENTS.
DESPERATE FIGHTING AND HEAVY LOSSES.

London, May 7.
The allies have captured' the, heights facing Mendere Fort, and are advancing steadily, devoting attention to the section between Gaba Tepe and Sedd-el-Bahr. The Turks have been reinforced by a division, and desperate fighting 13 in progress. The allies are endeavouring ,to prevent reinforcements junctioning with other Turkish forces. The losses on both sides are heavy.
Mendere Port is near Kum Kale, where the French landed. From Gaba Tops, where the New Zealanders landed, to Sedd-el-Bahr, at the extremity of the peninsula, is about twelve miles as the crow flies.
