ENEMY'S USE OF ASPHYXIATING GAS NULLIFIED.
GROUND GAINED BY COUNTER-ATTACKS ON THE AISNE.
: Wellington, May 7. The High Commissioner reports under date London, May 6, as follows
"North of Ypres the allies easily repulsed a night attack debouching from Steenstraate. South of Ypres the. Germans attacked near Zwartelen the trenches near Hill 60, captured in April by ' the British. Their attack was very violent, and they again used asphyxiating gas, rendering them masters of the position. -The. British counter-attacked and recaptured the lost trenches. . .' ~'.';...'....!
" At Bois d'Ailly, on the Aisne, a pronounced counter-attack' by; the allies from Legerement progressed, . the allies retaking a fresh portion of the German position, where they gained a footing during
