POLICE COURT NEWS.

THEFT Or A GOAT. MAN GIVEN ANOTHER CHANCE. A plea of guilty was entered in the Police Court yesterday by Alfred Adams, a young man, who was charged with having stolen an overcoat valued at 60s. He had unhooked the coat from a peg outside a shop, but his actions wore observed by one of the assistant!) in the shop, and just as Adams was putting on the coat he was apprehended by a constable. Adams said that he was drunk at the time, and had but little recollection of the affair. He added that he hud hoped to go to the training camp at Treutham shortly. His Worship said that this being a first offence lie would not send the accused to gaol. He would be prohibited, and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. > DRINK CAUSE OF TROUBLE. Maud Adams, aged 40, having been found by night in a back yard in Newmarket, pleaded guilty to a charge of vagrancy. The woman was stated to have been loitering about Newmarket for some time, and drinking rather heavily. Her two daughters had been in an orphanage, but she had taken them out and had squandered a sum of £28 which the elder one had earned by her industry. His Worship said that lie would remand the woman until Thursday next. This would keep her away from liquor, and when Thursday came a prohibition order would probably meet the case. MISCELLANEOUS. A fine of 103, with 7s costs, was imposed upon Alfred Chadwick, H. S. Wilson, Christopher, Smyth, and James Hampton, each of whom had driven a motor-car which was insufficiently lighted. Two absent first offenders, convicted of insobriety, forfeited their 10a bail, and another one was fined ss. A first offender, who fell through a window whilst under the influence of liquor, was ordered to make good the damage, which amounted to ss. A Maori named Haua Takina was re-' manded to appear at Gisborno on a charge of horse-stealing.
