POLICE COURT NEWS.

A shout sitting of the Police Court was presided over yesterday by Messrs. H. M. Smeeton, E. Smith, and J. Stichbury, J.P.'s. Two women, Nellie Mills and Jessie McLeod, were each sentenced to a month's imprisonment with hard labour. The former was convicted of soliciting, and the latter of vagrancy. Charged with vagrancy, Joseph Lloyd was discharged on condition that he entered the Salvation Army Home. Convicted' of insobriety, one first offender forfeited his 10s bail, Thomas Halloran being fined 10s for his second offence within the last six months- Gus Leahy was allowed 14 days during which to pay £3 18s ■ medical expenses incurred by a bout of heavy drinking. Alexander Matheson was convicted of assaulting George Peacock, and Peacock of using obscene language. The two men had been drinking together, and Matheson had thrown a bottle at his companion. It missed its mark, however, but Mitheson then used his umbrella with some effect on Peacock's face. Matlieson was fined 40s. •with the alternative of seven days,' hard labour. Tho police were unable to recommend that he should be allowed time in which to pay, as he had not yet paid a previous fine. Peacock was fined 10s for the language which he used when Matheson assaulted him. . . ■ A number of cases were adjourned for the attendance of a magistrate.
