OCCIDENTAL CONSOLIDATED. £450 FROM 1101.8 OF PICKED STONE The manager of the Occidental Consolidated mine, Thames, telegraphed a return yesterday as follows"Treated 1101b of picked" stone for a return of 1790z of melted gold." Tho value of this return is about £450.

WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION. DEVELOPMENT OF SEVENTH LEVEL [Br TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] Waihi, Friday. Good progress is being made with the development of the Waihi Grand Junction mine at depth, and the seventh level is opening up well. Going west the Empire reef is in three sections, the first or hangingwall branch having been driven on for upwards of 400 ft. The branch averages slt to 6ft in width, the first 250 ft biding low grade, and the next 100 ft good ore. At 350 ft in a cross leader was met with on the south side of the drive, and its position and appearance suggest that it is to be identified with the high grade leader between the main and footwall sections of the Empire reef at No. 6 level. On the central section of the lode at 25ft west of the main south crosscut 28ft of nice clean quartz is exposed, and for the first 120 ft broken out the branch shows an average width of lift of pay ore. From that point on to 300 ft the average is 7ft, and the quartz is of good quality. The third branch of the Empire known as the footwall leader had been followed west for 445 ft, leaving from /Oft to 80ft to be driven to reach the boundary. For the first 370 ft the leader averages fully Bft in width, after which it narrows, but for the vyholo distance it carries high-grade sulphides.

Going east from the main south crosscut the drive on the haneingwall section of the Empire lode— branch did not persist in this direction at No. 6 level—is out 273lt,and to within a few feet of the face, where the values cut out, the branch, though mixed with country rock and somewhat uncertain, gives very' satisfactory values over its full width. It carries the main characteristics of the rich footwall leader, and in all probability it will be found possible to break it out in the stopes going up in conjunction with the main portion of the Empire. The Empire proper has been followed east on the footwall sido for 610 ft, and, but for one blank, some 60ft in length, the pay values havo been continuous. At' 420 ft' east the lodes show 13lt of ore worth 32s per ton, at 490 ft 6ft worth 375, and at. 570 ft 15ft worth over £2. The present face is about 70ft west of No. 16 winze, where a run of good grade ore was met with at No. 6 level west of the fault. Thus developments east on the Empire reef have disclosed marked improvement to date compared with operations ,on this lode at tho sixth level, where the pay runs were short and narrow. It is evident that there will be a considerable quantify of ore available for sloping over a workable width between the seventh and sixth levels. On the Royal reef also the drives 'have disclosed better results than at the sixth level, where the country was more disturbed and broken. On its western extension at the bottom level the Royal has been followed for 150 ft, and the present I face shows sft of quartz. Assays taken at short intervals from 85ft to 130 ft west give values ranging from 16s to £3 per ton over widths varying from 10ft to 19ft, thus indicating that the whole of the I quartz between these points is of milling grade. Going east, the Royal shows 607 ft iof pay ore for the first 100 ft driven. Thence on to 150 ft, where the reef has I been cut off by a fault, there is a falling (off in values. The drive is being pushed on to see what exists beyond the fault. The main south crosscut is now out 790 ft I from the shaft, and encountered the George j reef at 785 ft. The lode is sft wide, and ! shows some mineral ore, but from appear- ! ance is not likely to prove payable as a j whole at the point of intersection. The sinking of the shaft for a V.i 8 level has I been resumed, and the sump is now down about 20ft below the seventh level, with no indications of water trouble and in a good class of country rock. The new hisr!) lift centrifugal pump installed at No 7 level, and capable of raising over 40.000 gallons of water per hour to the surface, has been given a trial run, and worked smoothly and satisfactorily.

TALISMAN CONSOLIDATED. TJie following cablegram has been sent to the head office of the Talisman Consolidated Cold Mining Company, Ltd., London: — Woodstock: South drive—Progress, 16ft; No. 3 crosscut, progress 23ft; No. 4 crosscut, progress 69ft. No. 14 level : No. 2 winze—Progress 16ft; reef 56in wide; value £5 6s 3d ; No. 6 winze, progress Bft; reef 56in wide; value £13 2s 6d; holed through to No. 15 level. No. 15 winze: Progress sft; reef 27in wide; value £9 2s 6d. No. 15 level: South drive—Progress 28ft; value nil; north drive, progress 33ft; reef 46in wide; value £9 13s 9(1.
