THE OFFICER'S TEA.
INCIDENTS IN THE TRENCHES. A young officer with the Indian troops at the end of his section saw four privates of an English regiment having hot tea, so he asked tho sergeant if, when he came back in half-an-hour, he could have a cup. Tho sergeant said, "Certainly, sir." The young officer went his round, and when he returned he was horrified to sco a soldier coming along with a mug of boiling hot tea and a hundred yards of death whistling around him. His only apparent concern was lest ho should fipill any of tho tea. When eventually he arrived safely with the tea he handed it to the officer with a polite apology for bringing it in a tin mug. Private J. Macalcesc, now in hospital in London, tells tho following anecdote:— " There's a story about a man in the Irish Guards who used to serve in the Irish Constabulary. One night, when the Germans were attacking and the Irish Guards wero brought up to drive them back, this man went up to his mate and asTccd, 'Has the Riot Act been read yet?' Was ho thinking for the moment ho was at home quelling a riot? It wan long before ho heard the end of it, and for days there was stuck up in the trenches of the Irish Guards this notice:—'Special order for fighting by night: Tho Riot Act must be read three times before firing on the Germans.* Tin's was signed with tho name of the ex-policeman."
