MORRINSVILLE AFFAIRS.
» CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday evening, Mr. W. J. Strevens, president, presiding. Mr. Armstrong resigned hi? position on the executive and Mr. Cargill was elected to the vacancy. The resignation, of Mr. R. H. Simpson, who is leaving for the front, was accepted with regret. Mr. Philpott raised the question of the need for lighting the town, and othor members were of the same idea. Mr. Clifford said that he had all the necessary data re lighting schemes, but thought that there were more important issues before the townspeople just now. The board's engineer considered gas the most suitable for Morrinsville. He had made inquiries regarding Hora Hora, and had , ascertained that it would cost about £7000 to connect up with Morrinsville. He would be in favour of a private company installing gas, the board to have the right of acquiring the plant at valuation on terms to be arranged prior to the installation. After further discussion, it was resolved that the Town Board be asked to consider the question of introducing a lighting scheme, and that a deputation from the chamber wait on the board at its next meeting re the matter. A . committee, consisting of the chairman and Messrs. Cargill, Gummer, Smith, and Home, was appointed to consider the question of mails. It was resolved to write again to the Telegraph Department regarding a telephone service to Pa°tetonga, via Tahuna, It was decided to ask the chairman of the Town Board to call a public meeting to consider the question of forming a beautifying society in the town. A discussion took place regarding the cemetery. Mr. Home stating that it was too small. It was decided to leave the matter in abeyance until the Maori Land Court case had been settled, as a portion of this reserve would be suitable for the purpose of a cemetery, should the board be successful in acquiring it. The Waharoa Athletic Club held its annual sports on Thursday. Unfortunately, an accident happened to one of 1 the 'competitors, Mr. Howard, of Mainmata, straining himself while taking part, in the tug-of-war contest. After receiving medical attention, he was sent to the Hamilton Hospital, where an operation was found necessary. He is now reported to be progressing favourably. Bio. F. A. Smith, provincial grandmaster, was present at the monthly meet I ing of the Loyal Morrinsville Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.r., on Tuesday evening. The X(i Bin. Peters presided, and conferred on the visiting Prov. C.M.. the honours of the Order. 'The resignation of the elective secretary, Bro. Simpson, who has volunteered for the front, was accepted. anil Bro. X. Wright was appointed to the position. At the conclusion of the business the Provincial CM. presented Dm. Simpson, who leaves lor Trentham camp shortly, with a fountain pen, in recognition' of his services. Bro. Simpson is the sixth member of the Order in Morrinsville who has h.?en accepted for the front. The remainder of the evening was spent in harmony. Mr. G. P. Armstrong, who is leaving Morrinsville shortly for Australia, has been the recipient of a presentation from the vestry of St. Matthew's Church and the ('..M.S.
