RUSSIAN ADVANCE OVER THE CARPATHIAN'S.
SEVENTY MILES OF MOUNTAINS MASTERED. AUSTRIANS DISLODGED FROM. HUNGARIAN SLOPES. Wellington, April 11. The Premier has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner in London, dated April 10: '• Petrograd report that on the front west of the Xiemcn an action of secondary import - ance is in progress. ''In the Carpathians a number of German and Austrian count-r attacks have been repulsed. The Russians continue to progress, .11. i now hold the whole of the principal mountain chain, extending hit" than 70 miles from Eegetow to Wolasatep, except a hill south or olaraichowa. The Russians took 1200 prisoners on Wednesday." An earlier message from the High Commissioner stated: " I'Vtn - grad reports that in the Carpathians matters arc progressing in th Ondava Valley. Ou Tuesday we dislodged an Austrian sectoi at Sztropko Pnezoc, across the Hungarian frontier. ''In the direction of Mezo Leborcz the Anstro-Germans, conoidably reinforced, attempted the offensive, but the Russians, ha\iiig occupied the front from Czablocz to Szuko, repelled all attack*. an-i inflicted serious losses on the enemy. "North of the railway line from Uszok to Berezna we were successful in crossing the principal chain of the Carpathian?, and scored a tactical victory on the heights south and north of Wolasatep.''
