WARFARE IN DESERT.
OCCUPATION OF AUS.
GERMANS POISON WELLS. Capetown, April 4. The enemy's defences at Alls, in German South-west Africa, which has been occupied by Union troops, included elaborate trenches, deep ajxl well-designed. They had a fine telephonic system, involving 30 miles of wire. The defences, included gun emplacements, sunken mines, and entanglements. The Union troops had a stiff task in covering the 15 miles of sandy desert from Garub to Aus. The wells had been poisoned with a carbolic solution. The enemy posted a notice at one well, indicating that the water was undrinkable. The enemy depleted the stores, and burned much material before evacuating the place. A mule exploded a mine, ami four mules were blown into fragments. The troops had a miraculous escape. The gun wheels passed within a few inches of the mines. The bodies of several Hottentots were found hanged.
