THE GRAVING DOCK.
Sir,—As one who has had many years' experience of graving docks and their working, I would like to ask if it is reasonable to expect the Harbour Board to find facilities for firms who are well able to provide their own? Is there anything to stop ship repairers building their own docks, as is done elsewhere? If so much work is available for the dock, the firms who use it most should guarantee the board against loss. I am sure if wo wait patiently we will find tho slipways will soon prove themselves capable of doing what is expected of them. It seems to me that certain interested persons have always put all manner of stumbling-blocks in the way of our very progressive board and its engineer, who is to be congratulated 011 the able way he has carried out his very difficult duties. We heard the same critics on the ferro-concrete, which was to collapse in a very short time, and also about the needless expenditure on tho lino tug, the Te Awhina, which, by tho way, has proved to be just what is needed here.
