Wanganui : The late murders near VTanjanui have caused a great sensation am one the inhabitants of this province, and caused many to leave their homesteads. Thero can bo no doubt but that •we have the very worst- description of the native race between W antranui and Taranaki. Thev go as coo'.ly about murdering a nakeha when the opportunity offers as a If.itohor would a bullock. Thus Mr. "Hewitt, an old «ettler. who was massacred \)v them last week. was shot outside bis own door, the body deliberately carried into '.he house and laid on his bed, and then decapitated. The head was cut off as close to tho shoulders as the trunk would admit of, and I understand that thev have carried it with them as another trophy to show their companions, in order to stir them up to so and do likewise. The other settler, a militiaman, doing duty at <>ne of tho nearest outposts to town, who b!so met, his death at the hands of these r 1 'fderers, last week was tomahawked hi a most, brutal manner. His body was sent $eto town for interment.
