BREACH OF AN AWARD
HOTEL LICENSEE FINED.
The Labour Department proceeded asrainst C. Kalnian, licensee of the Central Hotel, at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, to recover a penalty of £10 for a breach of the Hotel Employees' Award, in that he employed Joseph Shackleton as a barman, and failed to pay him a barman's wages. Shackleton was sued for £2 for accepting a lower wage than that prescribed by the award. The case had been adjourned for a week, in order that Mr. Kalmun 3 barman migul give evidence. Mr. Durum, who appeared for the licensee, said the barman was very ill, and could not at'end. Evidence was givin to the effect that Shackleton, who was a night porter, l ad been serving liquor in the public bar between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. for some time past. The defendant said ti.at under the old award a porter cou.d be employed as a barman, and he did not know any alteration had been made in tlie new award, which came into force in April last. The magistrate said defendant should have made hinjs»lf thoroughly acquaiuted with the provisions of the award. Judgment would be given for the Department against the licensee for £5, and against Shackleton for £1.
