ALLIES CAPTURE TRENCHES AND BLOCKHOUSES.
GROUND GAINED IN CHAMPAGNE AND ARGONNE. FRENCH AIRMAN DROPS BOMBS ON BADEN. Wellington, February 18. The Prime Minister received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, February —Paris reports that from the sea to the Oise, the allies' artillery fire dispersed numerous; bodies of Germans. Ammunition waggons were blown up and convoy's shattered. North of Arras the allies captured two lines of trenches, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. In the Champagne, north-west of Perthes, the allies captured German positions along a front of 800 yds. The allies made progress in the forest of La Grurie, in the Argonne, notwithstanding two violent counter-attacks. In encounters of cold steel the enemy suffered heary losses. A strong German attack on Four de Paris, west of La Grurie, was completely repulsed. French aeroplanes dropped bombs on the station at Friebufg, in Baden. " ' ' *• ■ An earlier message from the High Commissioner stated—Paris reports that in Champagne ten German counter-attacks at night were repulsed. A blockhouse and 100 yds of German trenches were destroyed near Fontaine aux Charmes, in the Argonhe. A violent attack in the neighbourhood of Four de Paris was completely repulsed with heavy losses to the enemy. Some prisoners were taken. East of the Bois de Malancourt, on the eastern flank of the Argonne, the allies have taken 100 yds of tie enemy's trenches.
