UNDESIRABLE ALIENS.
FOUR MALTESE IN COURT. [BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION-} Wellington, Wednesday. Rather unusual circumstances were «*- nected with the appearance of HHl* natives of Malta before Mr. W. G. Riddel], S.M., at the Magistrates Court to-day. The men were firemen on ths steamer Westmeath, and the charge against them was that, on February 10, at Auckland. Heine prohibited immigrants* they did unlawfully land in New Zealand. They appear, Kefoie an Auckland magistrate and were ea< h sentenced to a month's imprisonment, for desertion. As there is a probability of the Westmeath not being in New Zealand waters again before their term of imprisonment has expired, they were brought down to Wellington and an additional charge preferred against them, so that they will not l>e entitled to their liberty until their vessel sails. Each of the accused was ordered to pay 17s 6d costs, and to be detained in gaol unul the departure of the Westmeata.
