The High Commissioner reports as follows from London. January 31, 5.5 p.m. : Paris reports that the action yesterday along nearly the whole front was limited to an artillery duel. The cannonading was intense, the allies having everywhere the advantage.

At La Bassee the British retook all tlio trenches momentarily lost.

From Arras to Perthes- several of the enemy's works were destroyed, while their trenches also suffered. Bombs dispersed enemy gatherings, bivo'iacs, and convoys.
