SHORT-LIVED TRIUMPH.
GERMANS ATTACK FRENCH.
GROUND GAINED AND LOST.
Paris, January.3o.
The Kaiser early in the week witnessed a fierce attack on Blagny. The French withstood a shower of hand grenades, but yielded before the German bayonet. Trench after trench was taken by the Germans, who exultingly paraded four abreast into the suburbs of Arras.
Their triumph was, however, short-lived, for the French territorial gunners ceased their retreat, fortified a wrecked factory, and opened a destructive fire on the enemy with cannon and machineguns. The nearest Germans were overwhelmed, while others dropped their weapons and fled, demoralising those that followed. The French recovered all the lost ground.
The Kaiser, who was on a white horse caparisoned with purple, angrily dismounted, stepped into his motor-car, and went off to Lille.
