STERN CHASE OF THE GERMANS OVERHAULED BY FAST STEAMING A LIGHT CRUISER SUNK RUSSIANS RESUME OFFENSIVE Admiral Beatty's- report on the naval fight in the North Sea shows that the Germans were only brought into action by the high speed of the British battle-cruisers, which steamed over 28 knots and hit the retreating Germans at 17,000 yards. The disablement of the Lion by a lucky shot deprived the British squadron of a greater victory. The admiral's flag was then transferred to the Princess Royal. Only the Lion and the Tiger were hit and these were not seriously damaged. German prisoners report that the light cruiser Kolberg was sunk in the engagement.
The Russians have resumed the offensive in Prussia. The fight in Northern France continues, the Germans suffering heavy loss.
There is much activity in the neighbourhood of the Suez
Canal, where troops and warships are assembling.
Hostility to Germany is growing in Holland. A Bill for the extension of military service has been carried.
The Bank of England is advancing £5,000,000 to Roumania.
