SOLDIERS' GIFT CLUB.

WOMEN'S ORGANISATION

A xntBER of Auckland women are interestinc; themselves in the Auckland members of the expeditionary forces, and have formed a Soldiers' Gift Club. The object of the organisation is to send monthly to each of the Dominion troopers not" in Egypt a gift of some description. The committee cf the club consists of the followingMesdames —originator of the movement John Eoid, R. A. Carr, S. "He&keth, Edmunds, Misses Fenton and Alarney Hesketh. Miss Firth is hon. secretary.

A meeting of the committee was held yesterday afternoon at the rooms of the Victoria League.. The secretary stated that the list of articles considered suitable for gifts included dark red and blue handkerchiefs, singlets, nail-brushes, toothbrushes, • soap, shaving soap, tooth-paste, starch, boracio acid, towels, chocolate, cigarettes, pipes, tobacco, and small look-ing-glasses. Members of the club might send weeidy gifts if they cared to do so; but the sending of monthly gifts was compulsory.

The meeting was addressed by Colonel J. E. Hume, 0.C.D., and he was accorded a vote of thanks for attending, and also for placing at the club's disposal a room at the Defence Office, besides facilitating matters by allowing the members to obtain the numbers, names, and addresses of the Auckland members of the expeditionary force in Egypt. Thanks were also recorded to the District Defence staff tor assistance rendered, and to the Victoria League for the use of its rooms.

The committee decided that it as desirable that the public should send not bulky gifts but small necessities to be carried in the two finie pockets. It was decided to write to the officer commanding the New Zealand expeditionary force explaining the reason for the formation of the club so that the men will understand how it came about that they were receiving gifts from unknown donors.

Subject to the consent of the Victoria League Mis? Firth, or a member of the committee, will he in attendance at the league's rooms on Thursday afternoons from two to three o'clock to issue membership tickets and addresses of soldiers.
