GERMANS REPULSED.
HEAVY BOMBARDMENT.
SEVERAL ATTACKS CHECKED.
Wellington, January 22.
The Prime Minister has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner in London, dated January 22: Paris reports state that the enemy bombarded the allies' positions at Notre Dame de Lorette, and then delivered, at 5 o'clock in the morning, a new attack, which was instantly checked.
In the Champagne district two woods to the north-east of Be&u-se-jour were occupied by the allies, the enemy's counter-attack being unsuccessful.
In the Argonne, the Germans attempted an important attack on a salient in the allies' line in the neighbourhood of Saint Hubert. Having thrown our trenches into disorderbbyy y a heavy bombardment, the Germans attacked, but were repulsed by fire from our infantry and artillery.
