CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
SHIP FOR ISLAND TRADE.
REPLY TO SHIPPERS' COMPLAINT
The Auckland Chamber of Commerce met yesterday. Present : Messrs. Graves Aickin, acting chairman, L. J. Bagnall, A. C. Stevenson, A. Kidd, J. H. Upton, T. Peacock, A. B. Roberton, E. Anderson, G. L. Peacocke, and John Reid.
In reply to the complaint made by certain shippers of fruit from the Islands the Union Steam Ship Company stated that it had been forced reluctantly to withdraw the Talune from the trade on account of the very heavy losses entailed by running the vessel since the outbreak of the war. The Taviuni, the vessel put on in place of the Talune, had a capacity o£ 1450 tons, and was sufliciently large to deal with the trade in the present circumstances.
The secretary reported that a copy of the letter J had been forwarded to those shippers who had complained.
Reference was made to the controversy between the Government and the Chamber concerning the deposit demanded from users of the automatic stamping-machines, but the whole matter was deferred owing to the absence of the president, who has the matter in hand.
Messrs. Griffiths, Fraser, and Co., Ltd., were elected members of the chamber.
