CROWN MINES COMPANY.

MANNING OF CLAIMS.

[BT TELEGRATH. OWN CORRESPONDFNT.]

Paeroa, Thursday. At the Warden's Court to-day before Mr. F. J. Burgess, warden, the New Zealand Crown Mines Company, Ltd., applied for permission to work the Crown Mines with eight men and the Earl of Glasgow special claim with six men for six months. An objection was lodged by the Miners' Union on the ground that it desired its members to take up tributes in the mine. Mr. Porritt appeared for the company and Mr. Moresby for the objectors. The objection was settled bv a conference between Mr. H. W. Hopkins, attorney for the company, and Mr. T. Morgan, secretary of the Miners' Union. It was agreed that tributes would be let where agreed upon between the mine manager and the union. Mr. Morgan also asked that if the tributers obtained sufficient ore to keep 10 head of stamps in the battery going for six months the company will open the battery at the tributers' expense. Mr. Hopkins agreed that if the matter was left open he would meet the men fairly. It was agreed that the tributers should be allowed to use the aerial tramway and the trucks at their own expense. In support of J.he company's application Mr. Porritt pointed out that the company held 195 acres, 'which there was plant and machinery of the value of £100,000. Making the allowance for plant and machinery the total number of men required to man the mine was 32. The company had been endeavouring to find fresh places at which to work, but had not done so, and had now to employ men in prospecting. The company could employ 14 men for a time, but might soon have to reduce this number to six men. Mr. Porritt pointed out that in three years the company had spent £131,433. "and the bullion won amounted to £112.255. Evidence was given by Mr. Hopkins and Mr. G. N. McGruer, the mine manager. Tile warden granted permission to work the two claims with 14 men for six months, saying that if the company found it could not employ that number it could make a further application.
