Regarding the decrease in the land tax the Minister stated ,it was only apparent. It is due to tho fact that a sum of £112,600 of land tax money which ought to have been received in December, was not received until the beginning of January, this being due to certain assessments being late and to some adjustments. If that sum had been received the land tax would have been over £60,000 more than last year. The money is now to hand. In conversation with an Otago Daily Times representative to-day, the Minister for Finauce remarked that it has been said that the present Government was curtailing tho advances to settlers and to workers, but the figures proved that it was not ;ti. The actual amount paid ito settlors for the month of December was nearly £70,000, and tho amount authorised by the board for the month was nearly £280,000. The amount paid over to workers for the same month was about £90,000.
