tTHE XMAS CROWD AND GLASSES. The holiday season has brought the usual crowd of holidayseekers to pur city,- and with the Christmas throng there was opportunity of studying human nature in many of its phases, if one but had the time ; but there were few exceptions J;o the busy crowd that made the Christmas trade a pleasant surmise for many of our tradespeople, all were on business bent. There were, however, many points of interest that were readily noticeable, even to the hurrying passer-by, and one of these was the number of people wearing glasses. Young and old were alike adorned or disfigured with spectacles or eyeglasses. So many were the wearers that one must conclude that the old time prejudice against glasses has almost disappeared. There is ho doubt but it has largely given way to a right appreciation of the valuable modern optical helps in the shape of spectacles and eyeglasses. We would suggest two reasons for the degree of popularity that obtains with regard to glasses at the present time :— First: It has been proven many thousands OT times that the use of carefully-fitted glasses gives relief from headaches, and affects advantageously the general health, and there are few people who have not some friend or relation who has greatly benefited by wearing them. Secondly : The style in which glasses may now be made enables one to be so fitted as to enhance the personal appearance rather than to spoil it. The old style cumbersome ill-fitting frames were enough to create in any mind an aversion to the use of them, and yet some are still worn with utter disregard to appearances and utility. In noticing the many glasses worn, one was impressed by the great number of rimless that were seen, and again by the crooked slovenly way that some fitted. There is no reason for anyone to have badly-fitting glasses, when at Samuel Barry's Optical Rooms anybody may have them adjusted free of charge. , . Rimless glasses have been popularised by Mr. Barry, who was the first to make this style in New Zealand many years ago, after some years' practical experience in America, the home of rimless lenses. There are very man> styles of rimless mounts, both for spectacles and eyeglasses, and all the best styles are kept and perfectly fitted by Mr. Barry. The first essential about glasses is that the lenses must be right, but if the fitting is faulty even correet lenses will not give comfort. Rimless " Kontorik" lenses are the acme of perfection, and when made with the fine finish that characterises Mr. Barry's work, and fitted with the care and accuracy that he always bestows, there is nothing to equal them in comfort or appearance.
