OBITUARY.

MR. ROBERT FRENCH.

Tkz death occurred on Thursday night last of Mr. Robert French, who passed at, his residence, Belmont Terrace, Reuiuera, after a short illness, at the age of 66. The deceased gentleman took a life-long interest in political and temperance reform, and some years ago displayed an active interest in the "knights of labour" movement. The late Mr. French was a candidate for Parliament on three occasions, standing twice for Auckland City and once for Eden. He was one of the known temperance leaders in the Dominion, and was chairman of the Auckland Prohibition League for several years, "besides being vice-president of the New Zealand Temperance Alliance. Mr. French was engaged in organising work for the alliance until just before the poll on December 10 last. He also wrote a good deftl to the press on political and temper- • .:e matters. The deceased was an active worker in Knox Church, Parnell. of which he was one of the board" of manager?. Mr. French was in business in Karangahape Road for rome 30 years, retiring about four years ago. The deceased leaves a widow and seven children, the eldest son being Mr. W. J. Flinch, of San Francisco, one of the three Industrial Accident Commissioners for the State of California. The funeral will leave the late residence of the deceased this afternoon for Purewa.
