FIGHTS IN TRENCHES.
ATTACK ON BRITISH. EXPLOSION OF A MINE. SLAUGHTER OF ENEMY. (Received January 1, 11.40 p.m.). London, December 31. An eye-witness with the British, headquarters staff says that fifty dead Germans were picked up in one of the trenches we recently retook in Festubert, in the La Bassee region. It is estimated that in the attack on the village which was captured by the Germans on December 21, their loss in killed alone was 400. An incident on December 24, which was not mentioned in the last report, led to a slight loss of ground by us, but heavy casualties were suffered by the enemy. The Germans exploded a mine underneath a trench, several yards of which were blown in. The German snipers occupied a part of the destroyed trench, and enfiladed the rest. Meanwhile a larger body of the enemy advanced, but our guns opened fire on thein_j with deadly effect scattering the enemy and killing many. The guns also bombarded part of the occupied trench, killing the occupants.
