I Mr. Henry Newbolt, the wellknown poet, author of "Drake's Drum." Dr. Frank Ayson, Astronomer Royal since 1910. NEW ZEALAND RECIPIENTS. i SIR JAMES WILSON. Sir James Wilson was born at Hawick in 1849. and educated at the London and Edinburgh Universities. He landed in Victoria in 1870. Four years later he came to New Zealand and ever since he has been sheep farming in the Rangitikei district. He eat as a member of the House of Representatives for the constituencies of Foxton (1885-1890), Palmerston North (1890-1893) and Otaki (1893-1896). He is well known as having been for many years Dominion president of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. He is also president of the Board of Agriculture and he has been an active worker in connection with agricultural and pastoral associations for many years. MR. GEORGE HOGBEN. Mr. George Hogben was born in 1853, and educated at the Congregational school, Lewisham, and the University school, Nottingham. He was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1871. After leaving school he entered the English Civil Service, which he left to enter the Cambridge University, where he graduated B.A. in 1877 and M.A. in 1881. Mr. Hogben entered the teaching profession as mathematical and science master at Oldenham Grammar School. He wis selected by commissioners in England to be mathematical and science master in the Chrbtchurch Boys' High School when the school was founded in 1881. In 1886 he was made inspector of schools in North Canterbury. In 1889 "he was appointed headmaster of the Timaru High School. In 1899 he was appointed Inspector-General of Schools and Secretary for Education, which position he has held ever since. Mr. Hogben was president of the New Zealand Educational Institute in 1886 ; president of the Canterbury Philosophical Society m 1887; secretary, from 1891 until the present time, of the Seismological committee of the Australasian Association ; president of the Home Reading Union for several years, and he is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London. He represented New Zealand at the Empire Educational Conference in London, in 1907, and at various ether conferences.
