GERMAN'S SHOP WRECKED
NEW YEAR'S EVE SCENE. | UNRULY MOB AT GISBORNE. | ALL WINDOWS SMASHED. | MAYOR REFUSED HEARING. MOTOR-CAR DAMAGED. [FT TELEGRAPH- —PRESS ASSOCIATION-] Gi'sborjte, Friday. A demonstration* was made by a number of young men about nine o'clock last evening, outside of the shop of a naturalised. German named F. Wolinsiedler, who con. ducts a pork butcher s shop. A well-aimed stone smashed a big phU glas3 window of the shop. The crowd gradually increased in number., and stores became more frequent until all the local police were called out to keep the mob in order. Wohnsiedier then closed the premises and extinguished all the lights
By midnight there were fully 2000 people surging round the shop, singing patriotic songs and the police had an unenviable time, there being several uely rushes.
Stones and bottles were now being thrown in volleys .at regular intervals and as each pane of glass went the crowd cheered lustily and by one o'clock this morning the premises were completely •wrecked, every pane of glass in the building being smashed to splinters, while tiie interior of the shop was also badly knocked about.
The police mad© no arrests, as it was practically impossible in the dense crowd to see where the missiles came from.
At one stage the Mayor, Mr. W. Sheiratt, was sent for by the police. He drove up in a motor-car and attempted to address the crowd. He was unabl« to obtain a hearing while a volley of stores smashed the wind-shield of the car. I The crowd finally dispersed about 2 a.m.
