GLASGOW BRINGS NEWS OF VALPARAISO BATTLE.

IMMENSE EXPLOSION ON THE GOOD HOPE. UNABLE TO SUCCOUR STRICKEN CRUISERS. (Ecceived November 19, 12.5 a.m.) London, November 17. The correspondent of the Central News at Rio de Janeiro reports that the cruiser Glasgow has arrived at Valparaiso. The official Press Bureau announces that the captain of the Glasgow reports that the discipline in the naval fight off the coast of Chili was the same as at a battle practice. The Scharnhorst and Gneiscnau, and a small cruiser found the range of the Good Hope. The Monmouth and the British auxiliary cruiser Otranto, which was silhouetted against the sunset, was hampered by a heavy head sea. The enemy's third salr caused a fire on the Monmouth, next came an immense explosion on the Good Hope. Flames from the warship shot 200 ft high. The Glasgow was unable to succour the stricken cruisers and escaped at full speed. A message from Santiago, in Chili, states that the search for survivors from H.M.S. Monmouth, which was supposed to be ashore on the coast of Chili after the fight with the German fleet, proved fruitless, and has been abandoned. The account of the action off the Chilian coast, issued by the Admiralty on November 9 stated that the Glasgow participated in the action with the Good Hope and Monmouth. Early in the action the Good Hope and Monmouth took fire but they fought on until nearly dare, when a serious explosion occurred on the Good Hope, which foundered. The Monmouth hauled off at dark. She was making water badly, and appeared to ;e unable to steam away. She was accompanied by the Glasgow, which hat . during the whole action, fought the Leips.c and Dresden. On the enemy ag.-.in approaching the disabled Monmouth, the Glasgow, which was also under (ire from one of (he armoured cruisers drew off. the enemy then attacked the Moi.noutl, again, but with what result is not definitely known. The Glasgow was no- extensivly damaged, and had very few casualties. According to a New York message Captain von Spee, commander of the German squadron, stated that the Glasgow suffered small damage, and escaped m the darkness. Since these accounts no reliable news had been heard as to the whereabouts of the Glasgow.
