WAGES OF TAXI-DRIVERS.
CASE FOR ARBITRATION COURT. [BY teleo:iaph.—press association.] Wellington, Tuesday. The claims of the Wellington Taxi-drivers' Union were before the Conciliation Council to-day.
The employers' representative said it was impossible at the present time to accept the proposals. The employers did not intend to consider claims during war time.
The employees' agent said the price of all foodstuffs had been raised, and workers had to pay. The employers were trying to get more out of the public every day and were not trying to do the fair and square thing by the employees. At present drivers' time worked out at 5d an hour.
Finally the commissioner announced that it had been decided to refer the dispute to the Arbitration Court. In the meantime the parties might consider the question informally and try to arrange a basis for working conditions until the matte; could be definitely settled by the Court. In one or two cases it seemed that some injustice was being done to employees, and this might be rectified by a temporary arrangement.
