GILDED SIXPENCES.

REMITTANCE MAN CHARGED. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Whangarei, Tuesday. A remittance man named Frank Eaton Hudson appeared on remand at the Magistrate's Court to-day, and was charged with having spurious coins in his possession. The police said that there had been complaints from shopkeepers that gilded sixpences were in circulation. Accused was arrested for drunkenness, and when the usual search was made of his clothing, gilded sixpences wero found in one of his pockets. Further search was made at the boardinghouse where ha stayed, with the result that a tin of gold paint and a brush were discovered.

Mr. W. A. Carruth, for the defendant, said that his client was well connected, and that he hr.d received the coins in the usual course of business.

Mr. E. Page, S.M., deferred Lis decision until to-morrow.
